Cabochons may not be the most sought-after emerald variety, but they nonetheless have their own appeal. Despite the rarity of transparent gem material, cabochons have very high colour purity and no extinction. Given that colour is a major factor in the appeal of gemstones like emeralds, this sort of cutting is very enticing to gem cutters.

In our studios, we crafted this magnificent, one-of-a-kind hand-carved emerald earring. The hand-carved emerald is set in sterling silver that has been hand-engraved in green. Its top is an emerald set in silver. The earring comes with a green stone in an oval form. This stone was produced in mines in Zambia. When compared to its step cut facet design, the common round brilliant and the countless variations of the brilliant style shape leave an altogether distinct aesthetic impression.

Curved bottoms are another common feature of emerald cabochons. Depending on how the specific gem acts, the bottom may occasionally also be flat or may occasionally curve similarly to the top. The fundamental argument for cutting an emerald into a cabochon is to be more gentle on internal cracks in the emerald while cutting and polishing.
