Emerald cabochons have their own appeal despite not necessarily being the most popular variety of emerald. Although rarely transparent, gem material that has been carved into cabochons exhibits extremely high colour purity with no extinction. This is a very appealing form that gem cutters have in their skill set because colour is a key component of the appeal of jewels like emeralds. Although their potential for variety is less than that of faceted or carved gems, there are a few fundamental styles to be aware of.
Green with brilliance, this Fine Zambian Ring Size Emerald Oval Cabochon measures 9.5mm x 5mm x 4mm. These 4.5 carat oval emerald cabochons were found in zambian mines. A domed top distinguishes a typical cabochon cut. The bottom of emerald cabochons will typically be curved as well, yet this isn't always the case because it can sometimes be flat. The bottom may occasionally also be flat or may occasionally curve similarly to the top, depending on how the particular gem functions.
Although a cat's eye emerald is a fairly uncommon phenomena in emeralds, cabochon cuts are performed to reveal one. This effect can only be seen in a small percentage of emeralds, and most cutters don't look for it in their rough stones. To be more gentle on internal cracks in the emerald during cutting and polishing is the most likely reason an emerald will be cut as a cabochon.
